The Short Inca Trail is a popular trekking route in Peru that takes hikers on a scenic journey through the Andes Mountains to the iconic Machu Picchu. Unlike the longer Inca Trail, which takes several days to complete, the Short Inca Trail can be done in just two days, making it a great option for those who are short on time or who prefer a less strenuous trek.
The Short Inca Trail typically starts with a train ride from Cusco to the town of Ollantaytambo, followed by a bus ride to the trailhead at Kilometer 104. From there, hikers will trek for about 6-7 hours through beautiful landscapes, including lush forests and ancient ruins, before reaching the famous Sun Gate and catching their first glimpse of Machu Picchu.

Cusco – Km 104 – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes.
Our short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu takes us along the most stunning stretch of the historic trail, allowing us to visit magnificent Inca sites and take in breathtaking panoramas of the Andes mountains. Covering a distance of 10 km, our journey starts in the Sacred Valley and follows the original Inca Trail up to the Wiñay Wayna site before continuing to Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate (Inti Punku).
As we make our way to Machu Picchu, we pass through a lush cloud forest and encounter a variety of plants, flowers, and birds, as well as larger mammals like Viscachas (rabbit-like Chinchillas) and Spectacled Bears if we’re lucky. Arriving at the Sun Gate in the late afternoon, we get our first spectacular views of Machu Picchu below. This time of day offers great lighting for photos and fewer crowds to navigate.
After taking in the scenery, we continue along the trail before taking a side trail that leads us to Aguas Calientes, where we check into our hotel in the valley below.
