The 5-day, 4-night Salkantay Trek is a longer and more relaxed version of the classic 4-day trek. It offers more time to acclimatize to the altitude and explore the beautiful Andean landscapes. The itinerary includes an extra night at the campsite in Soraypampa, allowing for a more gradual ascent towards the Salkantay Pass. You’ll also have the chance to visit the hot springs of Santa Teresa and explore the coffee plantations of the Llactapata region. The final day of the trek includes a visit to Machu Picchu and a return to Cusco in the evening.

Cusco to Soraypampa
You’ll be picked up from your hotel in Cusco early in the morning and driven to Soraypampa, the starting point of the trek. Along the way, you’ll stop at the town of Mollepata for breakfast and to pick up any last-minute supplies. Once you reach Soraypampa, you’ll set up camp and have the rest of the day to relax and acclimatize to the altitude.

Soraypampa to Chaullay
After breakfast, you’ll begin the hike towards the Salkantay Pass, which is the highest point of the trek at 4,600 meters above sea level. The ascent is challenging, but the stunning views of the Salkantay mountain make it all worth it. After reaching the pass, you’ll descend towards the campsite at Chaullay, where you’ll spend the night.

Chaullay to La Playa
Today’s hike takes you through a variety of landscapes, from cloud forests to highland meadows. You’ll pass through the town of Collpapampa and stop for lunch at a scenic spot overlooking the Rio Santa Teresa. In the afternoon, you’ll continue on to the campsite at La Playa, where you can relax and take a dip in the nearby hot springs.

La Playa to Llactapata
After breakfast, you’ll start hiking towards the Llactapata Pass, which offers stunning views of Machu Picchu in the distance. Along the way, you’ll pass through coffee plantations and fruit orchards. Once you reach the campsite at Llactapata, you’ll have the afternoon to explore the Incan ruins and enjoy the views of Machu Picchu.

Llactapata to Machu Picchu to Cusco
Today is the highlight of the trek, as you’ll visit the ancient Incan ruins of Machu Picchu. You’ll start the day with an early morning hike to the Sun Gate, which offers the first panoramic views of Machu Picchu. Afterward, you’ll have a guided tour of the site and some free time to explore on your own. In the afternoon, you’ll take the train back to Cusco, where you’ll arrive in the evening.
