Day 1: Cusco - Mollepata - Soraypampa

You’ll be picked up from your Cusco hotel early in the morning and driven for around 3 hours to the town of Mollepata. After breakfast in Mollepata, you’ll start your trek towards Soraypampa, which takes around 7 hours. The trail takes you through beautiful Andean landscapes, including valleys and small mountain communities. You’ll also be able to see stunning views of the snow-capped peaks of the Vilcabamba mountain range. You’ll arrive at Soraypampa, which is located at an altitude of 3,800 meters, in the late afternoon. Here, you’ll set up camp and have dinner before resting for the night.

Cusco - Mollepata - Soraypampa

You’ll be picked up from your Cusco hotel early in the morning and driven for around 3 hours to the town of Mollepata. After breakfast in Mollepata, you’ll start your trek towards Soraypampa, which takes around 7 hours. Soraypampa - Chaullay

After an early breakfast, you’ll start hiking towards the Salkantay Pass, which is the highest point of the trek at an altitude of 4,650 meters. The hike to the pass takes around 4 hours and is quite challenging due to the altitude. However, the views from the pass are absolutely breathtaking, and you’ll have a chance to take plenty of photos. From the pass, you’ll descend towards the small village of Huayracmachay, where you’ll stop for lunch. After lunch, you’ll continue descending towards Chaullay, which is located in the cloud forest at an altitude of 2,850 meters. The hike to Chaullay takes around 3 hours, and you’ll arrive in the late afternoon. You’ll have dinner and spend the night in a campsite.

Chaullay - La Playa - Aguas Calientes

After breakfast, you’ll continue trekking through the cloud forest, passing waterfalls, rivers, and small villages. The trail takes you through a lush, green landscape, and you’ll see many different types of plants and flowers along the way. You’ll stop for lunch in the village of La Playa, where you’ll also have some free time to explore. In the afternoon, you’ll take a local bus to the town of Hidroelectrica, where you’ll start a 3-hour hike along the train tracks to Aguas Calientes. This is the gateway town to Machu Picchu, and you’ll spend the night in a hotel.

Machu Picchu - Cusco

On the final day of the trek, you’ll wake up early and take a bus to the entrance of Machu Picchu. You’ll have a guided tour of the ruins, which takes around 2-3 hours. You’ll learn about the history and significance of this ancient Incan city, and have plenty of time to take photos. After the tour, you’ll have some free time to explore on your own or hike up to Huayna Picchu (optional, with advance booking). In the afternoon, you’ll take a bus back to Aguas Calientes and then a train back to Ollantaytambo. From there, you’ll take a bus back to Cusco, arriving in the late evening.

The Salkantay Trek is a popular hiking route in Peru, known for its stunning Andean landscapes and breathtaking views of the Salkantay mountain. To prepare for the trek, it’s important to acclimatize to the altitude in Cusco for a few days before starting the hike. You’ll also need to pack warm clothing, comfortable hiking shoes, and plenty of water and snacks. Most treks are led by experienced guides and include all meals and camping equipment. The trek is challenging but suitable for anyone with a good level of fitness. The highlight of the trek is, of course, a visit to the ancient Incan ruins of Machu Picchu, which can be reached by train from the town of Aguas Calientes.
