Machu Picchu, a 15th-century Inca citadel, is located in the Andes Mountains of Peru, and is one of the most visited tourist destinations in South America. If you’re planning a trip to this amazing historical site, here are some tips that may help make your journey more enjoyable.
- Plan ahead: Machu Picchu has a daily limit of 2,500 visitors, so it’s essential to book your tickets and tours in advance. You can purchase tickets through the official government website or with a reputable tour company.
- Choose the right time: The best time to visit Machu Picchu is during the dry season, which runs from May to October. The peak tourist season is June to August, so if you prefer fewer crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder season, in May or September.
- Altitude sickness: Machu Picchu sits at an altitude of 2,430 meters (7,972 feet), so it’s important to take precautions against altitude sickness. Spend a few days in Cusco before visiting Machu Picchu to acclimate, and consider taking medication to prevent symptoms.
- Dress appropriately: Wear comfortable shoes and clothing, as there will be lots of walking and climbing stairs. Bring layers, as the weather can change quickly, and don’t forget a hat and sunscreen.
- Guided tours: Hiring a guide is highly recommended, as they can provide in-depth information about the history and significance of Machu Picchu. There are also audio guides available for rent at the entrance.
- Other attractions: Consider visiting other attractions in the area, such as Huayna Picchu or the Inca Bridge. These attractions require separate tickets, but they are worth the extra cost.
- Respect the site: Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a sacred place for the local indigenous people. It’s important to respect the rules and regulations, such as not touching or removing any artifacts, and disposing of trash properly.
