When the impressive city of Choquequirao was rediscovered, it was left aside by visitors because Machu Picchu was already known all over the world. However, one historian speculated that it was the Golden City, and it was later confirmed that it was the last refuge before the Peruvian coast.
Situated close to the heavens (sky, sun, moon, stars and mountains), this impressive hike will take you to the mysterious final sanctuary of the Incas. Choquequirao (3103 MASL – 10178 FASL) is a huge archaeological complex located in the vicinity of the sacred mountain of Salkantay (6271 MASL – 20569 FASL) and the Apurimac River canyon, which is still being cleaned and restored. You will enjoy impressive mountain views and abundant Andean flora and fauna.
This trail includes a part of some of the original Inca trails of South America and is loaded with history and legends. This 4-day route covers a distance of 60 km.

Cusco - Cachora - Chiquisqa
On the day of your excursion, before sunrise, we will leave your hotel and begin our adventure. A breakfast will be provided around 5 AM, so be sure to have all your equipment ready. Our destination is the town of Cachora, which is about 5 hours drive from Cusco and where the trailhead is located. During the morning drive, we will pass over the Cunyac Bridge between the departments of Cusco and Apurimac, and travel through the district of Curahuasi and the Andean Community of Saywite. Arriving in Cachora (2800 MASL – 9186 FASL) at approximately 10 AM, we will meet our riders and other staff and begin our trek.
We will hike for approximately 2 hours on steep trails that will take us to the Capuliyoc pass (2915 MASL – 9563 FASL), where we will enjoy an energetic lunch with our first views of the Apurimac valley, as well as the snow-capped peaks of Padrayoc and Wayna Cachora. From Capuliyoc, we will also have a distant view of Choquequirao. Then, we will descend to Coca Masana (2330 MASL – 7644 FASL), where the climate becomes warmer and the flora and fauna begin to change. Finally, we will reach Chiquiskä at 1900 MASL – 6233 FASL, which is closer to the Apurimac River, where we will camp and spend the night in tents. In this camping area, the locals of Cachora offer refreshments to hikers from their humble huts.

From there, we will begin a challenging three-hour ascent to Santa Rosa (2115 MASL – 6938 FASL), where we will take a well-deserved rest. Continuing our ascent to Maranpata (2850 MASL – 9350 FASL), we will encounter a more manageable climb. Along the way, we will see various types of Andean flora that thrive in the region. We will pause for lunch and rest by the Chunchumayo River around 2 PM. We will also see many wild flowers, orchids and birds during our hike. At this point, we will find small huts, where we will set up our camp for the night.
