The Ausangate trek is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular hiking trails in the Cusco region, offering breathtaking scenery, a variety of wildlife, and glaciers and lakes of all shapes and colors. It is also one of the most challenging hikes in the area, with three high passes that exceed 5,000 meters or 16,000 feet in altitude. The imposing presence of Apu Ausangate, which stands at 6,380 meters or 20,926 feet, dominates the southern horizon of Cusco. As we approach this massive mountain, one can’t help but be impressed and appreciate why the ancient Incas held it in such high esteem. During the Ausangate trek, we will also pass through local villages, where people still wear their traditional clothing, including women with beautiful flat-top hats and free-roaming llamas.
